Roadhouse (daytime, early morning)
In the bar was Dawn wearing pink bunny pyjamas and was sat on a stool with her aching body tensed and tears were running down her face. Her eyes were puffy and red, giving it away that she had been crying all night and hasn’t slept a second. All the time she repeated in her head,
‘What have I done?’
She was far in her thoughts when Jesse walked in, that she jumped when he tapped her on the arm. She gave a shriek and leapt from the stool.
“Mum, you ok?” Jesse enquired, concerned.
Dawn realised it was Jesse and turned away to rubbed her face to clear the evidence of her crying. The last thing she needed was Jesse worried of matters he didn’t need to know at this minute.
“Yeah, I’m fine just didn’t get much sleep. What do you want for breakfast?” Dawn smiled with a rough voice at Jesse, as she shuffled her white slippers to towards the kitchen and patted his head.
Jesse eyed his mum suspiciously as she sniffled around the kitchen.
“Erm, can I just something to go? I was late up and rosy will be her e any minute.”
Dawn looked at her watch and was surprised to see how late they actually were. Jesse had a minute until his ride came; obviously she lost track of time her she was drowning in her own despair.
“Yeah, here’s an apple and a cereal bar, also some money for lunch. Have a good day hunny,” Dawn said, coming into the bar and handing over the products she described.
Her son took them with a hug and said,
“Thanks mum, you’re the best. Love you lots.”
“Love you too,” Dawn whispered with a sad smile as Jesse ran out to the car that pulled up.
You see Dawn wanted Jesse to have a normal life including a normal education, even though they were in the middle of nowhere Dawn had paid a car company to come to pick Jesse up everyday for school, which was miles away. She would do anything for Jesse, even she was broke and homeless she would find a way for Jesse to life normally.
Sam had been tossing and turning all night, thinking about the happy memories he had with Dawn. For example, water fights, picnics, talking out their issues and also working on the cars. Even though Dawn had been going out with his brother, it wasn’t that awkward for them as they were always friends first and nothing else mattered. He wanted to go back to that time, where everything was peaceful and innocent, but now all he thought was,
“Where’d it go all wrong?”
Dawn was cleaning the bar counter when Sam strolled in and as soon as she saw him she turned around, pretending to put away glasses.
Sam sighed and slowly walked up to the counter.
“Dawn, Dawn,” Sam said softly, but he was being ignored, so he yelled,
“WHAT!” Dawn bellowed as she turned round in a flash.
“Why did you do it? How could you have done it? To Dean, he was heartbroken,” Sam asked, but all Dawn did was scoff.
Dawn had reached breaking point and was getting really annoyed at being the only one blamed, so she expressed her thoughts,
“Yeah, right it takes two people Sammy.”
“But you knew about Jesse…” Sam began but was cut off by Dawn.
“That’s not what I meant,” Dawn said, gritting her teeth.
“Then what did you mean?”
“I meant that it takes to people two to get heartbroken, Sam. You see, Dean cheated on me, that why I left!” Dawn cried out, shocking Sam.
“What?” Sam whispered.
“Yeah Sammy, Dean isn’t as innocent in this as he makes out to be,” Dawn snarled back, smiling nastily at Sam.
With that said, Dawn left the roadhouse leaving behind Sam, who was opening and closing his mouth like a goldfish.
ROAHOUSE (LUNCH TIME) (DINER, SOMEWHERE)
Dean had driven for hours and hours, trying to control his rage and forget the memories from the past and the argument in the roadhouse. When he had finally got tired, he stopped at a diner and had been sitting there ever since, just nursing a black coffee. He stared out the window and thought,
‘How could she? She was the love of my life? I thought she would love me no matter what?’
In the back of his head a cruel, but truthfully voice said,
‘Past tense, pal, you broke the rules first. Yeah, she may have acted bitchy and spiteful towards you, but you’re the one that released this hell. You’re the one who started this game.”
With that in his mind, he went back 7 years, when he and Dawn had been together for a month after she had arrived.
Flashback (7 years summer 1999)
The sunrise hit the bedroom full blast, as the normally closed curtains were wide open. The light woke up a very sleepy and hanged over Dean, the only comfort he had from the nausea, he was feeling, was the girl in his arms; the love of his life. He snuggled closer to the woman in his bed, and felt the hug returned. He was happy. ‘Was’ being the huge word in this sentence, as the next second Dawn’s voice came from the other side of the door as it began to open.
“Hey Dean, I thought I would come over to apologise…” Dawn started but slowed and cut off when she saw the scene in front of her.
Dawn saw Dean cuddling a sleeping blonde haired bimbo, both naked, condom wrappers spread around the room followed by varies clothing, even a couple of bottles of whiskey.
Dean was abruptly awake at the sight of Dawn, with her eyes building up with tears. In a quick burst, he remembered all the things about the night before, the fight with Dawn, Dawn storming off, him going to a bar, getting wasted and coming back with someone that was not Dawn.
“Amy, princess, wait,” Dean desperately cried, as Dawn ran out the room, tries falling down her face.
Dean rushed after her, grabbing his clothes as he went. He was just in time to see Amy speeding off in her car. That was the last Dean saw her, until last night. No one would return his calls and then she just disappeared like thin air and either though he stopped looking, he never gave up hope he would see her again.
End of flashback
As Dean remembered his worst mistake of his life, he thumped the table as though that would make everything disappear and normal again. Dean unexpectedly stood up from his table, leaving money and walked briskly out of the diner, people’s eyes following him cautiously.
Roadhouse (Day 2.30pm)
It had been a couple of hours since Dawn had spoken to Sam, who was currently thinking in his room. She was in the bar, looking outside with images of Dean and his affair in her mind, making her fury grow gigantic. She knew that she should have told Dean about Jesse, but after the affair she wasn’t in the right mind and when she did try, it was hard to locate him because of the scams and then she lost her confidence again.
She was tugged out of her trance by an oncoming vehicle that sounded familiar to her ears. She thought it was a hallucination until her arrogant ex-lover walked out open the car door.
‘How dare he come back here?’ Dawn thought.
Her fury overloaded at the sight of him as she grabbed the baseball bat near the door and strolled out, bat raised and then she smashed down on his prize precession; the Impala. She knew it was childish, like she was back to being 14 years old and cutting herself because of the key. But she had enough of people blaming her, her life being abnormal and reckless, just because she was different. All the fights, vampires, demons and slayers she experienced would stay with her forever. Dawn really didn't need Dean complicating her life anymore than he had.
Glass flew everywhere as she hit the windows on the front and side. Dean leaped out swiftly as anger and concern swirled in his eyes.
“Dawn what the hell you doing?” Dean barked, grabbing her shoulders, which Dawn shrugged off hurriedly.
“I am breaking the thing close to your heart and helping you feel what I felt,” Dawn said, raising the bat again.
This time Dean was ready and fought with Dawn, like a game of tug-a-war, but being stronger Dean was able to snatch the bat and throw it in the distance.
“Look Dawn I am so…” Dean started, when Dawn growled out,
“If you finish that sentence I will kill you. You are NOT sorry because if you were, you would not have done it in the first place?”
“Fine whatever Dawn, if you don’t want to hear me apologies, then you are going to hear this. It was a shitty, cruel and disgusting thing what you did, keeping Jesse a secret.”
“What I did to you, you’re joking, right? I was 16 years old and the first I had sex, you got me pregnant. Great experience and when I was going to tell you about being pregnant, I found out that my baby’s father was cheating on me,” Dawn explained, leaving Dean speechless.
“What?” Dean said, no louder than a whisper.
“Yeah when you were having fun, drinking and shagging with someone else, I found out I was pregnant and was going to tell that day I saw you that we were going to have Jesse,” Dawn smiled unpleasantly.
Dean was about to reply when his eyes moved slightly behind her and he gasped warningly,
His voice spoke volumes as well as the shadow that had formed during the conversation, she just noticed. Dreading the scene behind her, she turned reluctantly round and her whole stomach cringed when she saw her shocked son with his eyes full of tears, which were fit to burst out any second.
“Jesse,” Dawn called franticly after him as he ran round the corner and out of sight.
